Sophio Medoidze / Bastard Sun
What good is fire if it doesn't warm you?
This is a collection of works by Sophio Medoidze, an artist born in Tbilisi (born in the Soviet Union, now a city in Georgia) and currently living in London. The artist works in the fields of video, photography, writing, and sculpture, exploring the poetic possibilities of uncertainty. Her work has been exhibited in numerous venues to date, including the Tate Modern and the Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles. At times, I also work anonymously as Clara Emigrain, presenting my work outside of the gallery framework. She explores the relationship between politics and dynamics in rural and urban, language and translation, and gender. Her work is often born out of text, and is developed into installations that incorporate video, sculpture, and text.
The publication Bastard Sun contains 12 collections of short stories, along with photographs taken after the Georgian civil war in the 1990s and short texts written during subsequent visits to Georgia. Her writing offers readers a nuanced and sometimes humorous look at personal and political change.
This collection of works allows us to consider new interpretations, perspectives, and blank spaces by synergistically utilizing the visual images provided by photographs and the effects provided by texts and words.
This work is a joint publication by KONA BOOKS, a publisher based in Tbilisi, Georgia, with a focus on contemporary visual and academic projects, and DISTANZ.
