SoiL Thornton / Choosing Suitor
A collection of works by Brooklyn, New York-based artist SoiL Thornton.
Soyle Thornton's work resists categorization according to preconceived notions of genre, medium, artistic subjectivity, biography, gender or racial identity. She crosses the boundaries of painting, sculpture and photography, and has expanded into installation art. She continues to exhibit her work internationally.
A multifaceted play on words and meanings, which can be seen in the titles of the artist's works and exhibitions, has been working against established concepts in the art scene, from medium characteristics to issues of branding and commodification. In doing so, it explores the modes of distribution of artworks and how artists can become brands and acquire value through their public personas. For the artist, rethinking the limits of artistic media and common presentation formats seems as important as unsettling expectations and notions of identity directed towards individuals, especially artists.
Since 2015, Soyle Thornton has combined street style photography taken with a mobile phone, the codes of gender identity and sexuality from the gaming app LGBT Flags Merge!, and artist-commissioned text (author Andrew Blackley). To accompany the exhibition Choosing Suitor, he has produced an inclusive publication: the book Choosing Suitor.
In today's world where diversity is celebrated, this is a collection of works that is all the more thought-provoking through the artists' humor and expression.
