This is a collection of works by Niu Jinmei, the mother of artist Chang Yuchen (also known as Chang Yuchen).

"Jing-mei is my mom. After she underwent surgery at the end of 2015, she started drawing on paper while she was resting in bed. At first, she used colored markers on the blank pages of my sketchbook at home, and later on, she used crayons and pastels on colorful paper. Since then, I have made "atelier visits" whenever I return to Beijing. I felt my mom in these drawings, but more than that, I felt a mysterious and indefinable power. In each drawing, the seemingly repeated elements are all subtly unique, and this tension between similarity and distinction created almost an optical illusion, a constant tremor. The repetition is not mechanical, but takes on a pulsating feeling and persistence.

I admire not only her work, but also her style of work. By the dining table, in bed, sometimes on a folding chair. Before cooking, during the laundry, between trips to the bank, between walks with Dandan (our dog)... Watching how she spends her time, I see that art is not something special that only happens in a certain place or moment, and that "artist" is not necessarily a profession. Just as flowers reach for the sunlight and grass peeks out from between the cracks, Mom seizes a moment of opportunity from the housework and daily worries and takes off from there. With focus and joy, she fills up scraps of paper, fragments of time. Her essence flows naturally, and her art flourishes naturally. In this way, she imbues the fragments of life with the sublime.

Over the last seven years, I have been slowly but diligently building this book. Meanwhile, Mama has maintained a high level of productivity, occasionally asking Baba to email me new scans, so the page count keeps growing. As I type these words, Mama has already begun a new work on a new canvas across the ocean. This book is merely a collection of several stages of her practice, and the order of the books is not chronological. I surrender to the flow of her free energy, and hope that when you open this book, you will float with me." - Excerpt from the foreword by Zhang Yu-chen
