In this zine, you can imagine a "dreamy queer utopia"... 'Overture' celebrates LGBTQ+ Brazilian youth living in oppressive political climate
A collection of works by Guilherme da Silva, a photographer based in Sao Paulo, Brazil and Milan, Italy. The film celebrates Brazil's oppressive political climate, queer youth living within it, and puts the spotlight on that community. (*Brazil is said to be the country that kills the most transgender people.) The Garden of Eden, with its simple joys and harmony with nature, has been described in art and poetry for centuries. "Arcadia" is a paradise. This work is inspired by that artistic conception. In this zine world, the subject is free to be whoever they want to be. At the time, Bolsonaro became president, and given the political climate in Brazil, this idea of "Arcadia" was more compelling to the author than ever. The author wanted to create a utopia for escapism, and the intolerant and negative attitude he experienced while working as a fashion photographer while shooting for a publication in Brazil, ``...the casting was ''feminine''. I chose to self-publish this work because of the frustration of being told that I shouldn't choose a gay man. Overture captures the body in a place (zine) where no one judges, relaxing in lush fields and enjoying the joy of being who you are. It is also a parting gift for the author who plans to leave his hometown in search of a place that is more accepting of himself and his vision.
More than anything else, the author hopes to convey a message of joy and belonging to those who see this zine. "I hope that when you look at this photo, you're lying on the lawn, soaking up the sun, listening to Lana Del Rey, and feeling like you've been transported to this world where you want to be free. I think it would be nice."
